Summary

Ford Motor Company is issuing a safety recall for 148,663 Mustang coupes and convertibles from the 2024 through 2026 model years. According to the recall documents, the issue stems from ewngine compartment wiring harness ground terminals that are susceptible to fatigue fractures. A fractured ground connection can trigger a sudden loss of drive power while driving, or cause crucial electrical systems—including headlights, windshield washer pumps, air conditioning, or the engine cooling fan—to stop working entirely.

Electrical Failures and Safety Standards

Because a fractured ground terminal can shut down the headlights or render the windshield washing system inoperable, the affected vehicles fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) numbers 108 ("Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment") and 104 ("Windshield Wiping and Washing Systems").

A sudden loss of motive power or nighttime forward illumination significantly increases the risk of a crash. Drivers may receive advance warning of the issue through a check engine light, audible warning chimes, or instrument cluster error messages prior to a component failure.

The Fix and Timeline for Owners

Ford dealership service departments will replace the engine compartment wiring harness ground terminals with revised eyelet pigtails free of charge.

Interim owner notification letters informing drivers of the safety risk were dispatched on August 31, 2026. However, because the final replacement parts are still being produced, secondary letters officially inviting owners to schedule their free repair are not expected to go out until March 2027.

Mustang owners seeking more details can contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332, referencing internal recall number 26C40. Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) involved in the recall became searchable on the NHTSA website under campaign number 26V547000 on August 28, 2026.
